Illustrating the lockdown (part 2)

In my last post I spoke about how when my illustration work was put on hold at the start of the lockdown I explored new creative outlets such as writing; however I did not stop illustrating entirely..

Back in March I had also responded to a call out for illustrators for new food blog Vittles. Started by Jonathan Nunn as a response to both the lockdown and the elitism of the British food scene, since then Vittles has been consistently publishing excellent, new and refreshing food writing and Illustration.Much of my animation, illustration and visual minutes work deals with themes surrounding the healthcare system, mental health and other social issues. While working with Vittles I explored how these themes also intersected with how we enjoy, prepare, buy and serve food, particularly in the wake of the lockdown. Since then I have illustrated articles ranging from the mythology of agriculture to the politics of the lunch break to illustrating and writing my own submission about Balkan food and supermarkets!

You can see many of the illustrations in the Illustration section of this website however I strongly recommend you also see them in their original context and read the brilliant articles at https://vittles.substack.com/

Also if you can, please subscribe and donate to support uncompromising, challenging food writing and the illustrators bringing it to life!
